Microsoft Releases Windows 8 Tablet Ad Highlighting iPad’s Flaws, High Price [Updated] [iOS Blog]
As noted by The Verge, Microsoft has released a new Windows 8 tablet ad that uses Siri to highlight a few of the iPad’s shortcomings, depicting the ASUS VivoTab Smart tablet as a robust productivity machine while implying that the iPad is more suited to entertainment. In the ad, which is entitled “Less Talking, More Doing,” an iPad is depicted next to the aforementioned VivoTab Smart, showing off the system’s multitasking capabilities and its built-in office apps. A Siri voiceover points out that the iPad does not support multiple windows at once and does not offer Microsoft Office apps. “I’m sorry, I can only do one thing at a time,” Siri laments.

Apple Bringing Some Mac Production Back to U.S. in 2013
NBC reports that Apple CEO Tim Cook will announce during an interview airing on Rock Center tonight that the company is bringing some Mac production back to the United States. In an exclusive interview with Brian Williams airing tonight at 10pm/9c on NBC’s “Rock Center,” Apple CEO Tim Cook announced one of the existing Mac lines will be manufactured exclusively in the United States next year. Mac fans will have to wait to see which Mac line it will be because Apple, widely known for its secrecy, left it vague. Cook’s announcement may or may not confirm recent rumors in the blogosphere sparked by iMacs inscribed in the back with “Assembled in USA.” “We’ve been working for years on doing more and more in the United States,” Cook told Williams. Cook has more to say about the effort in a lengthy interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, noting that Apple is spending about $100 million on the effort. It’s not known well that the engine for the iPhone and iPad is made in the U.S., and many of these are also exported—the engine, the processor. New iMacs not delayed after all
All of the iMac fans who were dismayed by the thought of not having a new 21.5-inch or 27-inch skinny iMac under the Christmas tree this year can rejoice — according to sources close to 9to5Mac, the smaller iMacs are already being shipped to distribution points around the US and the big-screen model is on track for December delivery. The report was corroborated by AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski, who received word from his sources that the newly redesigned all-in-one Macs will be right on schedule. At this point, however, Apple’s iMac page still isn’t taking pre-orders for the slimmed-down desktop.
Mansfield may lead Apple away from Intel chips in Macs
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple’s Technologies group, headed by senior vice president Bob Mansfield, is exploring advanced versions of the chipsets used in the iPhone and iPad lines for use in the company’s future desktops and MacBooks. The outlet cites three people familiar with Apple’s research initiative as confirming the plans. According to Bloomberg, the switch isn’t likely to happen for at least a few years, but its sources insist that Intel getting the boot is “inevitable” as Apple eventually wants to put its desktops, MacBooks and mobile devices on equal footing in terms of capabilities and compatibility. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to most Mac fans who’ve witnessed the steady increase in iOS features making their way into OS X in recent years. Abandoning Intel for its own internally developed silicon makes sense in terms of Apple’s financial and patent interests
Apple to Launch New Mac Mini at Next Week’s Media Event?
9to5Mac is reporting that Apple will announce a new version of the Mac Mini at next week’s rumored media event, alongside the 13″ Retina MacBook Pro and the iPad mini. These new Mac minis are said to begin shipping immediately after announcement. Apple last redesigned the Mac mini with a unibody aluminum enclosure in 2010, and last updated the computer with faster processors last summer.
Why the iPhone 5 is Too Radical
You’ve heard the collective judgement by the tech echo chamber: The new iPhone was just like the old iPhone, only taller. The iPhone 5 is boring. Apple is too conservative. They didn’t really change the phone, but only made minor tweaks. And that’s what’s wrong with the iPhone 5: It’s just not radical enough
